Why update your electronic charts?

A quote from a well-known industry magazine says it all…

"Paper charts can be corrected easily by anyone with a pencil and access to Notices To Mariners or to the data published in various local boating publications. An older [paper] chart can be altered and updated for years, until it finally falls apart from usage. Not so with [electronic] chart cards - what you buy is what you use until you buy another. If you've had a card for more than a couple of years, chances are [it] should be updated... And don't think the year-to-year changes are minor: According to a C-Map spokesman, a recent, and typical, upgrade of a wide-area chart resulted in 3,000 changes. Even if 2,990 were minor, any one of the last 10 can ruin your day!" - Dockside Magazine

Jeppesen Marine updates its electronic chart libraries twice or three times a year by incorporating the latest official changes issued by hydrographic offices. Here is a quick way to find out if you are in critical need of updated charting data:

- Check your code number for chart class and version number.
- Visit our worldwide online catalogue that lists all the charts in that class, along with the latest version number.
- With every update the chart's version number increases by one. The official Jeppesen Marine position is that a chart is out-of-date when it is two versions old. You do the math, then decide.

UPDATING means bringing a chart up-to-date within the same price class or technology. Updating costs approximately half the price of a new chart.
