Chart plotters are instruments dedicated for displaying electronic nautical charts along with the position of a boat.  Most of the chart plotters have a built-in GPS and can be connected to other instruments, like an echo sounder, radar, etc.

Electronic nautical charts for chart plotters are stored on small plug&play cards.

An alternative to a chart plotter on board is a personal computer with compatible navigation software installed, as well as a GPS receiver, which allows for the display of the boat’s position. The navigation software reads the nautical chart that has been successfully unlocked on to the computer through a program called C-Map NT+/MAX PC Selector. It is good to have a water resistant computer, as well as an extra power supply, because a PC on board requires a considerable amount of power.
